Question #1:

Two questions concerning dog food?

I am researching dog foods for my year old English Cocker Spaniel. Now that she is an adult, I am trying to figure out what is the best for her. She is moderately active and as a breed, tends to gain weigh easily which I want to diligently control.

It seems that many foods tout high protein as a quality but what I am trying to determine is, how much protein should be in a moderately active dog's diet? And, if you feed weight control (specifically Healthy Weigh Management by Blue buffalo), is it a good idea to keep them on that food even after they reach an ideal weight?

Any advice?

Question #2:

Question about grain free dry cat food?

I want to switch my cat to a better cat food. When I adopted him, he was and still is on dry science diet (which is crap). I've read that wet food is better for cats than dry, mostly because of the moisture content and fewer grains which cats don't need.

So I'm wondering, wouldn't a grain free dry cat food suffice? The cost of good wet food can get pretty expensive over time and I'm already paying to feed 3 large dogs a quality food.

I'm thinking that a grain free dry food would give all of the benefits of wet food besides the moisture, but my cat drinks enough water on his own.

Please no cynical answers, just answer the question. And I've already read enough articles/posts about ingredients and 'what a cat needs' so I don't need a lecture either.
It's not that I am willing to spend money on the dogs and not the cat. I am not feeding the dogs top of the line food because I can not afford it. I am also not looking for top of the line cat food for the same reason.

I take care of all of my pets as best as I can, and they are happy and healthy, so don't judge me for not spending tons of money on overpriced food that most likely won't make much of a difference over medium grade food.

I asked here to get a variety of answers from people who have cats. I am more familiar with dogs than cats because I have been around them my whole life. I can't ask the vet for advice because they recommend crap food for both the cat and the dogs. I have read the articles and done the research but I need to find a food to fit my budget.

Most people on this planet have a budget, whether they have a pet or not.

Question #4:

Guys do I sound like the ideal girl if so why did my ex cheat on me?

I don't know what would make him want to cheat on me, I have been told by my guy friends that any guy would be lucky to have me. I am in the honor society, I'm on the water polo team, swim team, even on the football team, I model, I love singing, acting, and I am very talkative. When he was with me I did all the things he wanted...I answered to every booty call and I gave him blow jobs and I always made him food when he wanted me to. I don't know what I did wrong for him to cheat on me with 3 different girls. Could it be I'm a control freak or are guys just dogs and can't stick to one girl?
I did all those things for him because I loved him and I wanted to make him happy. I never used to do that for my other boyfriends but his charm just made me want to please him.

Question #5:

12.) Carole buys 17 bags of dog food. She can only fit 2 bags into each grocery bag. How many grocery bags will she need?

Question #7:

What is an average weight for a 14 week old calico female kitten?

My kitten went to her "check-up" appointment today, which is approximately 3 weeks from the time we rescued her and took her home from the animal shelter. When she left the shelter she was 2.0lbs, today they said she is 2.5lbs! Why isn't she gaining weight!? We give her dry and wet food, the dry food is kitten food (but sometimes my dog eats it all!). They said they don't know if she has worms (we couldn't get a stool sample because she was being stubborn and wouldn't go to the bathroom this morning!) so they gave us medicine to "de-worm" her anyway. But why is she so little!? She can't even get all of her shots because she doesn't weigh enough.

So (i will sum it all up so it's easier to answer the questions.)
1.) What is the average weight for 14 week old calico female kittens?
2.) How can I keep my dog from eating her food while we are away?
3.) Why is she so little?!

Question #8:

euthanasia possibility for old dog?

My dog is very old. I've had him since I was four- he's now almost 14. He doesn't eat anymore, he can't stand up or walk for longer than a few seconds, and he has a kidney problem which is now unattended to because he does not eat his medicated food, therefore he has leg twitches. He can't do more than lay down and drink water. We have a vet appointment for him in a few hours, and though euthanasia wasn't discussed, we imagine that upon examination, it would be done.

I've been extremely stressed, watching him deteriorate like this, and knowing what has been coming up, I haven't been able to sleep or eat in days. I need to know- if/when euthanasia is decided, would we need to schedule another appointment for it, or would it be done today?

I love him very much, but I've mentally prepared myself to let him go- and his quality of life I'm sure is very limited, if not unexistent, when he's starving and nearly immobile. Aside from wanting to know to be relieved from the pain of watching him go, and being able to relieve his pain, I know that taking him to the vet in and of itsself may be a painful ordeal for him which shouldn't happen more than once. I'm just very concerned.

Thank you.
He's clearly in pain if he's starving, and cannot walk... He refuses to eat anything but drinks water- because his kidney condition makes him thirsty.

Question #9:

Is Chef Michaels a good dog food brand? My friend uses it and like me she wants nothing but the best.?

Any answers or suggestions would be helpful!
I recently changed "My" dog food brand to Innova. I'm asking this question for a friend.

Question #10:

Camp food ideas to make over a fire 10 points best answer?

i was wondering what are some ideas for camp food besides hot dogs that are easy to make over a fire

thanks

Question #11:

How much should I be feeding my dog?

I have an 8 month old Golden Retriever, and we're spaying her in a couple of weeks (if that helps). We are currently feeding her Innova Puppy Food, and it says to feed her 2 3/4 cup daily, so we have been feeding her 1 cup in the morning, 3/4 in the afternoon, 1 cup at night. However, for the past week or so, she hasn't been finishing her food for every meal. Sometimes she doesn't even touch it. What could be the reason? She isn't secretly eating anything else, I'm 100% sure. She isn't overweight, and our vet says she isn't underweight, although only a few people have said that she was skinny. I think she's just at the bottom of the range of the appropriate weight (she weighs approx. 41 pounds). She is exercising daily for about 45 minutes. We are giving her lots of attention too.

Question #12:

Opinions on Deli Fresh Dog Food?

I have been seeing commercials for this dog food and wanted to get others opinions on what you think about it...

I currently feed Innova and was just curious about this food since I have been seeing a lot of commercials for it lately. Im not planning on switching to it as I agree with Bells that they need something crunchy to help with their teeth. Maybe just as something special every now and then. Thanks all for your input...I appreciate it :o)

Question #13:

Should people on welfare....?

be allowed to have dogs.... Dogs can be very expensive if they are taken care of properly, especially large breeds! This includes dog food, wormer, shots, grooming, toys, treats. If they don't have the money to take care of themself, should they be able to have dogs?
let me add a bit....
some one on welfare cannot take care of themselves on their own, therefore they have welfare to help them until they get on their feet, aka get a job! sooo if you are on welfare, you cannot currently take care of yourself, therefore not properly taking care of your animal.

Question #14:

How long will it take our new dog to adjust?

I recently took in a 1yr old Male GSD/Greyhound Mix (ODIN) from previous owners did not want him any longer. Ive had him for only 3 days and he is so nervous. He foams from his mouth from nervousness and yawns alot! He doesn't want to even attempt to eat his food either. How long will it take him to adjust and what could I do to make him want his food?
took him out for a jog/walk, came back and he decided that he wanted to eat the small portion I gave him of food. I gave a small portion since he hasnt ate much at all in a couple days and I didnt want him to hurt his stomach. Hopefully doing this each day he will be good to go and eat a good amount of food not just a cup.
Now to get him settled in his new home.

Question #15:

I am changing my dogs food, I am thinking Blue Buffalo, but it says for higher energy dogs?

I have a Shih Tzu that is not a high energy dog, she does play and we take her for walks but she is no where near a high energy dog, is this too much protein for her? We also feed her a small piece of raw chicken for a dinner treat everyday. I have to buy her food at petsmart as that is the closest place to me besides grocery stores.

Question #16:

I just adopted my first puppy yesterday. Im afraid he might have parvo.?

The adoption women said that there was a case one week prior and one of there dogs died. she said the puppies were never around that dog but to keep an eye on him. He hasnt been acting lathargic at all but this morning he threw up whole pieces of food and his vomit was orange. should i be worried.

Question #17:

Would you ever take your Vets advice on dog food?

The way I see it, Vets are paid by large dog food companies to promote their products. Vets are NOT nutritionists, their schooling tought them how to heal a dog in the event of injury or illness, not what to feed a dog some that they live a long and healthy life. Why do we take these peoples advice as if it were fact? Don't vets make money off of us bringing our dog in because he has an upset stomach or an allergic reaction? Would you suggest the best possible food dog food to your customers if it meant you would lose money due to pets being much healthier and also due to the fact that you would lose your incentive from big companies like Science Diet? I wan't to know what all of you think. Personally, I rotate three types of dog foods: Orijen, EVO and Taste of the Wild and I wouldn't ever trust my veterinarian to recommend a good food for my dog but I would like to hear why some others trust their Vets recommendation.

Question #18:

My dog misbehaves on purpose what can I do?

I have a 1 yr lab x. She is very small about a 30cm in height 10kg in weight, she is a very excitable, friendly dog, she was very quick to train except walking to heel, but she will sit come stay etc. however I have started to realise that she will completely misbehave on certain occasions. When for whatever reason we cannot get out for a walk or a shorter walk than usual (which is rare), the next morning she will have urinated all over the kitchen floor, even though she will have been toileted regularly throughout the day, any other day she can hold it in. I can no longer leave her in the house when I'm at work 3 hours in the morning as she will find something to destroy even when I believed everywhere was clear she still finds something to chew on, kitchen doors, telephone wires. I have left her bones chew toys the tv on doesn't work. When I call her to the area of destruction so I can show her and say no! that's bold, she won't come then no matter what voice I'm using to attract her, you can see her skulking off when I am approaching areas of destruction.
Yesterday has really done it for me this time, my daughter and I took her out for her walk, we were on bikes in the park and she was off lead as she will still pull the when approaching other dogs, after 4 miles we were heading home and she bumped into a dog with the same temperament as herself and no amount of treats calling would bring her back, she actually stopped when she was called turned to come back, then mentally flipped me the bird and ran off finally the other owner got her dog on lead and she came back and I put her on lead went home. I went up to my mums for a couple of hours, I would usually take the dog with me except I was so annoyed with her I left her outside where her kennel is, with food and water and toys. Brought her in when I came back, the night went on like any other until my daughter went to let her out this morning and heard her saying misty no! I thought she has peed because I left her the day before but she had poohed and peed and it was walked in all over the kitchen floor.
I know in my heart of hearts this dog is misbehaving when she can't get her own way as any other day is perfectly normal, can any one offer constructive advice
Thanks everybody for your advice it is very much appreciated, all this behaviour happens when I'm not around, when I am around she doesn't chew anything, pee or poop anywhere but outside, comes 99% of the time when called, sits and stays when told all without treats, she is a complete angel. She hasn't urinated anywhere else in the house except the kitchen where she sleeps and she can go for weeks without that happening and last night was the 1st time she ever pooped inside, but again thanks for taking the time to help and for me back to puppy training yeah!

Question #19:

My dog is constipated: Raw feeders preferred (REPOST)?

I feed my dogs a raw diet and have been on this diet for about 4 months. I gave one of my puppies a lamb bone to chew on, and my 14 yeard old senior got it and now I believe he is constipated! I really hope the bone isn't stuck-- he doesn't seem in pain, just uncomfortable (If I scratch his back, he'll still do that foot thing, and if he was in pain he wouldn't), I've felt his stomach and he doesn't flinch, whine, or act like he's in pain at all, and he's a super-sensitive pup- if he was in pain he'd tell me. He still has an apetite but is more picky now. And he acts like he is in discomfort- he won't jump up on the couch. I noticed his discomfort late afternoon yesterday. He strained to poop and nothing came out. So last night I gave him some mineral oil and he pooped a very small amount later last night and a tiny bit today. He ate some grass but not the large amount to throw up, but rather a small amount to help aid in digestion. I'd give him canned pumpkin but my grocery store is out. He does seem to be acting a little better today, but still uncomfortable, he has gas, and his stomach is still making noise, but he doesn't want to jump on stuff such as my bed or the couch (like he normally does). Do you think it's just a stomach ache, constipation, a blockage, or even a ruptured anal gland (he's never had anal gland problems before) or something else? I need some advice, what can I do? If he doesn't get better or if he gets worse, I will take him to the vet- but what now could I do? Should I give him more mineral oil or give him a baby enema? He's still eating (but I'm just giving him watered canned food right now-- no raw for now) and he's still drinking.

Thanks for any advice! And I apologize that it's a little long!

And his discomfort really seems to be at his hind end of the trunk ( ie- butt, tail). And he walks a little "funny".
his gums are fine, and he doesn't walk hunched up. He walks kind of like he has to poop- like a person would when they have to take a poo and are holding it in- kind of like a waddle.
The tiny amount he pooped contained no blood-- if it did I would've rushed him to the vet! He's not lethargic, just uncomfortable.
Honestly, he's not in pain. I know him well- I've had him since he was a pup and I've seen him in pain. He's a BIG crybaby and if he's in pain I would know. This really is really just discomfort which I believe is due to constipation. He has past a little stool, but not much. He is acting a little better the past two hours, he actually jumped on the couch- but a little uncomfortably-- and if he was in pain he would never attempt that-- he acts like he has poop stuck on his butt, but of course there's not. He also walks as a dog would if there's poop stuck on his butt.

Question #20:

My Dog Ate Chalk... Will He Be Ok?

I went outside to check on my dogs and there were several piles of throw up (they threw up the food they just ate) so I checked and saw pieces of white chalk in their houses! My punks ate the chalk! Will they be ok?? They seem to be acting fine (eating, drinking water and everything)

My dogs are mixed breeds and weigh about 50-60 pounds.
Thank you guys for your feedback.

The pet food recall scared us into making our own dog food at home for Blacky and Yeti. We did alot of research into dog nutrition requirements and went through alot of trial and error trying out new recipes for the dogs - seeing what they liked and what they didn't. We ended up with quite a few super yummy recipes. Our friends begged us to share the recipes with them and we realized there were probably lots of other dog owners out there that would love to try these dog food recipes out on their dogs too! So, 123 DogFood.com came into being. It really is as easy as 1-2-3.
