Question: My dog is constipated: Raw feeders preferred (REPOST)?
( Back )
Answer #1:
Dogs are pretty good at hiding their pain.. what you may think is "discomfort" may be real pain.
Is he walking kind of hunched up? That means he has abdominal pain.. I would get him to the vet tonite. Also check his gums.. are they a nice pink color? Or are they pale. Pale- vet!
ADDED
You dont need to make another account and "answer" your question to reply.. thats actually kind of against guidelines to do that.
You can edit your question to add more details to reply.
You can try to make him poop.. I may get some thumbs down for this suggestion, but it does work. I wouldnt do it all the time tho. Its a trick some show people use to get their dogs to "go" before going in the ring.. and I have even heard of vets using this trick to determine if a dog is really constipated or not.
Take a sulfur cardboard match.. insert the sulfer tip in the dog's anus.. that should make him poop. If matching him doesnt produce results.. then he needs to see a vet. If he still seems uncomfortable, even after going, see a vet.
If you have wooden matches, break the very tip off to insert.. dont insert a wooden match.. the anus tends to suck things inward, and a wooden match can perforate his anus or colon.
Answer #2:
Hi, One way to alleviate constipation, is by adding one to two teaspoons of bran to his meal. This allows for extra moisture in the stool. Fiber Supplement is also excellent for this.
Another method to soften the stool would be to add psyllium (Metamucil in the adult world) to his diet. Half a teaspoon twice a day.
The time to visit the vet will become evident when your dog's inability to poop is hampered by a decreased appetite, passing blood in minimal amounts, and overall lethargy.
Obviously though you are the one with the dog and know him best, if you really are worried it could be to do with the bone, then I would recommend getting him tot he vet. All the very best xx
Answer #3:
the dog needs to see a vet asap.
he may have a blockage or something called fecal impaction:this happens to older people too.
the vet needs to do an x-ray of the abdomen:you see it as "some discomfort" is terrible pain.
the vet may give your dog an enema, not laxatives:when the stools are like a rock, the mineral oil may not help too much.
please go to the vet asap.
Answer #4:
Wow. Uh, you're pretty frank. Just like a fellow answerer said above, dogs are EXTREMELY adept at hiding their pain. Why they do this is completely out of my scope of understanding, but that's besides the point.
Just take him to the vet! If you can't sort this out yourself, then go to the vet to sort it out! Btw, this isn't constipation. Constipation is when your faeces don't have enough water when the colon absorbed too much, or your intestinal tract moves food along too slowly. It's literally 'food stuck in the digestive system'. It's a really simple problem, but if you don't resolve it, it can turn into something really serious. Think about it. Faeces will accumulate in the digestive system, which is expelled to the anus. If your dog can't egest, it's going to queue in the anus canal. Unpleasant and dangerous. That's just my hypothesis, and I hope it's wrong, that your dog will be able to egest naturally, but most likely, if you've already waited a few days, JUST GO TO THE VET!
Best of luck to you, mate :D
Answer #5:
YES PUP LOVER-I agree with the rest of the crew here; just talk with or take him to your veterinarian. From your description, it sounds serious, or like it's getting that way.-----Sincerely,Larry-----
Answer #6:
Gah! It takes forever to update! This is my other account.
His gums are normal, he's not lethargic, and doesn't walk hunched. And in the tiny amount of stool that he had passed there was no blood or I would've rushed him to the vet ASAP!
He honestly is not in pain, I know him very well, I've had him since he was a puppy and I've seen him in pain. He's a BIG crybaby as well. This really is discomfort.
He does seem to be feeling better in these past two hours. He actually jumped on the couch a little hesitantly (like a dog who has poop on his butt), and if he was in pain he would've never attemptted that. He walks as a dog would that needs to poop (like a person as well when their holding it in) or as a dog when they have poop stuck on their butt- that kind of waddle- but of course he doesn't have poop on his butt.
It's been a little over a day since he started acting this way and I'm watching him closely-- if he doesn't improve or gets worse I will take him to the vet.
Add: Sorry Bare Nekkid Truth-- I did that and it wasn't loading the details.
Answer #7:
What sort of lamb bone? Most raw feeders don't feed a 'bone' - they feed meat with a bone in it.
If it was my dog I would try some meaty or an organ like liver or heart and then keep a really close eye on him for the next 12-24 hours.
Answer #8:
sounds like it may be his anal glands.
Answer #9:
Hi there
Give your dog a dose of cod liver oil. If there is any bone stuck in his intestines then the cod liver oil will soon move it.
All my pets love cod liver oil and it really makes their coats shine.
Best wishes.

The pet food recall scared us into making our own dog food at home for Blacky and Yeti. We did alot of research into dog nutrition requirements and went through alot of trial and error trying out new recipes for the dogs - seeing what they liked and what they didn't. We ended up with quite a few super yummy recipes. Our friends begged us to share the recipes with them and we realized there were probably lots of other dog owners out there that would love to try these dog food recipes out on their dogs too! So, 123 DogFood.com came into being. It really is as easy as 1-2-3.
