Question #1:

My beagle isn't correct in measurements?

He's like 18 inches in height, and the breeder said he was pure bred, but he parents did NOT look like beagles. They looked like a basset hound and beagle mix. I never really thought about it until my sister pointed it out. My dad says the dog is a farm beagle, and they're like a larger pure bred beagle. We didn't pay a lot for him, which was also weird, but he was the last one of the litter, and not many people were coming by to look at them, so they might have lowered the price for that.
He looks beagle and acts beagle, but his parents looked extremely much like a basset hound, but you could tell they were beagle.
Is there a chance that he is beagle and basset hound?

Does him being a lemon beagle change anything?
We've had him for two years already. We were just looking for a dog and my dad likes beagles, and he was pretty cheap. Him being a "pure bred" if he actually is was just a plus. So I wouldn't consider it completely a scam.

Question #2:

Are Bessiet Hounds always cold and do they have emotions and does this basset like me?

His owner that visits us says he likes me and if he did or he wouldn't sit under you and let you pet him. I asked he is not active he says bassets aren't active bred of dogs. I walk up to the dog the dog does not walk up to me and does let me pet him and shows his billy and likes billy rubs but he is cold like a statue and seems not to care.

Question #3:

What is the right type of breed for us? Please answer (long)?

I am not looking for a dog to have ALL of these traits (I have a lot) I just want the breed to have a FEW. (Please, no websites or telling me to go to a shelter and ask!)

Size: Small-Medium (or NO bigger than a lab... A lab is max. size)

Personality: Good with anyone, even animals (or at least just cats since we have 1 and other dogs for dog parks) (babies, kids, teens, adults, senior)

Other: Can make a good watchdog (does have to be though)

Grooming: Weather it's often grooming/ baths or few, I don't care

Barking: I don't want a dog that barks a LOT... Like a Chihuahua or something, a dog that barks maybe when someone comes to the door, or it sees a squirrel or cat

Living style: Can live in a SMALL house but MEDIUM sized yard

Exercise: Can get away with 1-2 walks a day (1 short, 1 long or 1 long) and could go walking on the park trails about every weekend or so

Health: Every dog has health issues but my family and I would want a dog that has as few health issues as possible (like a beagle or something)

Climate: Can live in any (I live in Oregon, it doesn't snow TO often but if it gets REALLY hot, we have air conditioning so we could get a dog that hates heat or something)

Hours alone: Can be left alone for 8 hours max. but we would get artificial grass for the bathroom (or puppy pads) and he/she would be home alone with a cat (plus, he/she would get a nice long walk when I get home). NOTE: We would NOT get a puppy, we would get a 1-2 (most likely 2) year old DOG

Training: I don't really care if it's stubborn or not

Yard type: Can do with a fanced in, medium sized yard (fenced is a plus)

"Type" of dog (i.e hound, terrier etc): I don't care

I know it's a lot to ask but like I said, it just needs a FEW of these (2 at the least). I don't mean to be rude for all of you that like these breeds, but we would like to stay away from:

*Chihuahua
*Dashund (I am not sure about the spelling) (aka weiner dog)
*Rat terrier
*Poodles

These are some breeds we like:

*Beagle
*Basset hound
*Treeing Walker Coonhound
*Westie
*Jack Russell Terrier
*Labrador
*Golden Retriever
*Brittany
*Cattle Dog
*Border Collie

Thanks for answering

Question #4:

im 15 years old and pretty responsible and i have always wanted a dog

Question #5:

what should i do to help my dog?

One of my dogs just died last night when it got hit by a car and now my other dog (which is a basset hound) is acting very sad. We brought the dog back from the pound to bury and we dont know if we should show my dog or just let her figure it out. please help.

Question #6:

why is my dog limping?

hi, okay so i adopted my ten month old corgi basset hound four days ago. but she's special she came with a gift, a respiratory infection. shes been taking medicine and it's going away. but ive noticed that every time she gets up from a nap, it looks like shes limping.now she has a apt. with our local vet on friday but it might be canceled from hurricane earl. but im really worried about her. her name is zoey. could it be from her pills. and shes also taking medicine for a skin problem. and she got spayed on the 24th. i need help because if her apointment is canceled and her limping gets worse, what do i do. please help

Question #7:

My 9 month old basset hound puppy always wee's with excitment?

Hi i have a 9 month old basset hound female, its just when we have visitors come into the house she just goes mad and wee's everywhere! she's still mouthing quite abit too, will she grow out of this with age.....i'm having to lock her away when people first come into the house, any advice on this......thanks for the help.

Question #8:

Female dogs living together?

I have a female boxer mix and a basset hound both are female the Boxer mix is 6 months old and the Basset is 2 years. When I first got my puppy the Basset had to get used to her, but once she saw that the puppy was staying she accepted her and stopped fighting her for attention. The puppy was doing great until recently now she's being very pushy about becoming the dominant female. My Basset isn't spayed. I have no intention of breeding her, but in order to save her from the people who had her and were abusing her I had to promise not to spay her so I'm just very careful with her when she's in heat. I plan to get the mix spayed, but I wanted to ask about if that may help with this problem? I know spaying doesn't changed temperament etc, but I've read a lot saying that female boxers are very hard to get to live happily with another female and I'm just wondering if anyone had experience with this to know if there's any chance after she's spayed she'll relax about the fact that she's not the alpha female?
She was a puppy they had raised and intended to breed as they do all of their dogs she would have had about 3 litters a year. I begged and pleaded until they sold her to me on the promise I didn't get her spayed. I felt like taking care of an un altered dog was a better option for her than leaving her for what she was going to get which was a kennel outside with just enough room to wiggle in and litter of puppies after litter of puppies with no medical care until she died. I am moving about 6 hours from where we are now soon which will mean the old owners will not be seeing her again and I am seriously considering spaying her once we're there so there won't be the drama of them seeing her shortly post surgery and throwing a fit about it. My vet does know the full story, she also has experience with the people I got her from and agrees that it would be more of a fight than it's worth if they found out. She IS going to be spayed it's just going to be a while longer.

Question #9:

DS Regulars: How To Get Dog To NOT Go Down Stairs?

Hey all, I have a sort of pet peeve or rather one thing about my Basset Hound that I am trying in vain to correct. Over all he is very obedient even for a hound, but this one issue he will NOT listen to me on.

We have a set of stairs leading up from the entrance into our home that leads up to our kitchen. Our dogs mainly are inside our kitchen when they are in our home, and this is where they sleep, eat etc.

We have a baby gate that cuts off these stairs from the kitchen, to the landing. The living room is below our kitchen as well. Our two Labrador Retrievers are well trained and they KNOW NOT to go down the stairs and that they are to only remain in the kitchen.

Our family doesn't want them just randomly wandering around the house and going all over the carpet, they've already 'ruined' the hallway carpet anyways by laying on it, hair etc. It's supposed to be a beige color but now is more brown/beige due to their feet trampling it etc....so we want to preserve the living room carpet, and believe that dogs should have a certain area to be in...not all over the place. As well it isn't good for a Basset Hound to be going up and down stairs all the time, so I don't want to put added stress on his bones and joints, so try to limit him going up and down them if I can.

Plus it helps if someone comes to the door because they don't run at them sniffing the person, they know to stay at the top of the stairs, so it's also a plus that way.

Problem is my Basset Hound WILL NOT stay in the kitchen. Say if for instance I am doing laundry and need to bring it up in a basket and don't want to almost kill myself trying to balance it over the baby gate, I will unlock it, go get the laundry and come back up.

I hear his toenails and funny Basset sounding thumps coming down the stairs, tail wagging at me. Little buggar. No matter how many times I correct him, bring him back up the stairs, tell him to No, and tell him to stay he does not listen. He just won't.

It's like a fun game for him or something I swear! He has a malicious little glint in his eye when he does this.

It would be nice to not have to have the gate up all the time, as one can get tired stretching their legs over it lol and like I said it can make it troublesome when we bring groceries home or bringing laundry up from the basement.

Any tips on how to make him STAY. All I can find information on is how to get a dog to GO down the stairs, correct fear of stairs etc. He is a hound, so his stubborness is very indicative of his breed. I have tried almost anything and am looking for help.

Sorry for the long story!

Thanks guys.

No rude answers, just help.
Here's how the kitchen is and the top of the stairs so you can get a picture of what I am talking about...

@DEBunker - Lol, yes we have a gate...I want to train my dog so the gate doesn't have to be up all the time! =P
Add: Dogs don't have to ruin your home. It's perfectly normal for someone to not want dogs in a certain area of the home. Yeesh.
Add: Thanks MamaBas and Cavisociety...I think he's pretty handsome too!

He's half Euro..his sire is from the kennel Van Grunsven, and his mother is a Canadian Ch.

Question #10:

Wondering if my dog may be aggressive?

Wondering if my dog may be aggressive? I've noticed that when i take my dogs out for a walk that my personal dog acts odd when he meets a new animal.
My dog is a Yorkie and he was approached by a basset hound puppy today that belongs to out neighbors.
The puppy came over to him in a playful type manner and my dog immediately tensed up and didn't move, like he was a cement statue.
When the puppy rolled over against him my dog jumped away and whined as if he was spooked.
I was told that this is a sign of an aggressive dog.
I own 3 other yorkies, the one i'm talking about is the biggest of the four and the youngest. I also have a cocker/terrier mix.
He grew up around all of these other house mates and is very friendly and playful wit them all. Its only strange dogs he acts this way with

Question #12:

what are your fav hobbies?

mine are

4-wheeling, playing xbox360, cheer leading, drawing, playing with my basset hound :) , and of course hanging out with friends

Question #13:

will our new puppy be small?

on Wednesday were getting a 2 and a half month old basset hound puppy. When our basset hound who is three was 2 and half months old he was still small and cuddly. We have seen pictures of the dog we are getting and he looks a little bit big for a puppy but we cant really tell as he is asleep without anyone holding him, so he still might be pretty small.
will he still be small and cuddly? we have seen his mom and dad and they arent overly big and theyre adults

also to add please dont say we shouldnt get a puppy that we have only seen pictures of, because we got our current basset hound from the same breeder.
thanks for any answers in advance :)
right for one, basset hounds are small and cuddly as puppies, for the first answer i do not mean i want it to stay that way forever! i just want a chance to make the most of having a puppy again as i didnt with my current basset.

Question #14:

I think he had sex with his dog...It's disgusting but need help?

So my mom's new boyfriend moved in earlier this year. His dog is a basset hound and she is 8. I'm worried because her vaginal area is soo stretched out and it does not look normal for any female animal's. It's not likely that she has had sex with another dog because her yard at her old home was fenced in and she was fixed so she can't breed. He never really took her out because he was busy with work.
I have heard of perverts that have sex with animals and I worry he might be one. He has done drugs in the past also so who knows what he might do.
Is it normal for it to look that way? Can it get that stretched out from her mating with other dogs? Or is it only possible if he did something with her?
She has never had puppies. she's fixed as I said before
He told me she never had puppies!

Question #15:

are all puppies different?

were getting a new basset hound puppy tomorrow, the breeder says he loves lots of cuddles and is very playful. I find this hard to believe as we have a three year old basset hound already and when he was a puppy, if anyone even attempted to cuddle him he would try and bite their face (no joke) luckily now he is so sweet and adorable.
My mom says the puppy probably is friendly because all puppies are different, is this true?
thanks for any answers in advance
no its a different breeder and the puppy will be 9 weeks old where as our three year old was 5 weeks old because he came from a bad breeder

Question #19:

how to convince my mom to let me get a beagle puppy (please read)?

well were planning on buying another puppy, we already have a male basset hound who is three and just adorable! :)
my mom wants another basset hound, we have only ever had basset hounds and it just gets boring after a while. Ive asked her what other dog she would prefer and she said "a beagle but i want another basset hound" My best friend has a beagle and a basset hound and she says the beagle is easier to look after and doesn't have as many health problems as the basset. The beagles i have showed my mom are $450 and the basset hound she wants is $600. She wont listen to me and i really want a beagle to make a change for once.
Im planning on having a talk with her tomorrow about it.
Have you guys got any tips? im not going to nag her, just have a quiet talk.
thanks for any answers in advance :)

Question #20:

It's raining...what are some things I can do with my dogs?

So I have the day off from work today...and I thought "Great, I can take my dogs all for long walks and play with them outside..." Well last night it rained and POURED...and it's still raining now, so I don't feel too keen on taking the dogs for a walk in the pouring rain. Rain = Mud = Three dirty dogs to bathe! So what are some rainy day activities I can do with my dogs so they don't get 'cabin fever'?

My Basset Hound was already previously running up and down the hallways being an idiot and all crazy. I know they are anxious too because they can't go outside and I needs some ways to burn off some of their pent up energy.

Thanks!
@Laura - Oh please, I don't need your wise words of wisdom about good dog ownership. I take my dogs out for walk each and every day, I don't want to walk in the pouring rain to become drenched, maybe you like getting an additional shower, but I don't. So keep your stupid comments to yourself.

To the other posters, thanks.
