Question #1:
Hi i have currently 3 border collies male almost 2, female 3 and female 4-5. we just got a rottweiler puppy yesterday 16 weeks old male pedigree. We brought pup home and put him in crate with his bed and let our dogs separately 1 by 1 come and see pup in cage and have a sniff. The female age 2 seemed happy wagging tail and sniffing she gets along with all dogs and people she just a big pup her self, we took her away and brought in the 2nd dog male and he is a nervous dog anyway and he wasn't very sure he went to the cage and was stiff and showing teeth as the puppy was jumping about the cage trying to get to the dog, we took him away then brought in the alpha dog female age 4 and she was sniffing and growling a wee bit, it was a short introduction.
We then put all dogs on leads including pup and took them for a walk together they all walked side by side although the male age 2 kept turning round and looking at the pup unsure about it. We got to the park where they don't normally go so it was neutral grounds, the 2 female collies were let off leads to run around with the pup and they were all running around nicely although the female age 4 did growl at the pup because he jumped on her.
We got back home and put pup back in his crate with water and food in the living room so he would be safe and so wouldn't annoy the other dogs. The pup is so big and bouncy and just wants to play constantly wont sleep just cries and barks and tries to dig his way out of crate trying to get to other dogs. The female age 4 has started laying down by the crate and growling at the pup, and the other female and male lay in the kitchen which is some what normal. When dogs are outside in the garden the pup is so relaxed and just a pup but as soon as he sees the other 3 he goes crazy just wants to get to them.
I thought i cant keep puppy in crate forever he will have to get to know the other 3 sometime and he doesn't like crate that much, i only put him in the crate for him to get use to his new surroundings and for the dogs to get use to him and avoiding hurting him.
So we put 2 dogs away in another room and let pup out in living room with our friendliest female age 3 and i think she may have seen the pups toys i dint no but she was acting strange and getting all Territorial over something she usually wants to play with anyone and anything. she started growling at the pup only because he was crying and struggling to get to her and she was staying away from him i thought maybe best out in garden more room for her to feel that she not trapped in a room with this pup, soon as they got in the garden the female was running around doing her usual thing loves being outdoors and the pup was just sniffing around he went up to the female and hit her with his paw and she attacked him, she had a hold of his face and wouldn't let go shaking him, the pup yelped and ran away in the house, such a wee shame. I shouted at the female NO don't you do that again and she showed her teeth at me too then i left her in the garden and went seen to pup he was ok thankfully.
I was at the end of my wit the pup has been crying and barking everytime he goes in that crate he will not settle when we walk out a room he barks really loud for his age infact! So we let him out and he just keeps going for the dogs. So my partner decided to take pup out with alpha female age 4 to park they walked side by side no problems got back home and thought i'll try have pup in living room out with other dogs on lead and get him to lay down and it took a hour for him to lay down and calm he just wanted the other dogs he started biting and chewing his lead and whining but eventually got him settled and he was laying down next to the female dog no complaints but he started getting too close again and she was growling, the other male still lay in the kitchen and the other female wouldnt come through to living room because the pup was there.
Its been 1 long hard day!!
Is there any advice? i just want to be able to have all dogs get along, especially the male age 2 he is unsure of the pup and snaps but the dogs only attack the pup when he gets too close. will my dogs get use to the pup? baring in mind my dogs were all pups and one stage too and i had to introduce them to each other at one stage but it was nothing compared to this.
What do i do? how do i get them to get along? and how do i stop the pup jumping and annoying the others please help
Question #2:
I get my pup in a week. He'll be 2 months old. I would like some general advice. How to house break the pup, when to take it to obedience school? Any big no no's that people have learned?
Question #3:
we are planning on getting a border collie, but we would have to leave it in the house some days of the week, i would be home with it weekends, and my mum only works part time so she only works 3-4 days (monday to friday) and when it is alone it would only be alone 3-4 hours max 5, as soon as i get home from school (3:30) i will give it a long walk and a run, and when we are not walking it (i mean when we have already taken it for a walk, instead of not taken it for a walk) we have a rather large garden that we can play in and he can run around in, the dog will be left alone in his VERY retardedly soft bed we have gotten him, we are going to train him to use a large kind of litter box that my nan used with her dog, and he will have plenty of toys, and an endless supply of food & water. and when we are home we will treat him with the most care a dog could possibly be treated with.
we have a rather large house that he can run around in during the day, or would it be better to keep him in the place where his bed and toys+food is?
or, should we crate train him? if so, could the 'crate' be like a mesh pen that i could make with my brother, who is a builder?
Question #4:
We've had our Border Collie for about 7 weeks and she's about 19 months old now. Since we got her I've been the one who's done daily training with her (I use clicker training) and she's learned a whole array of behaviours from recall right through to rolling over and giving me a 'high five'. I also play with her in the garden for a considerable amount of time each day, however it's my husband who walks her as I have a back injury which means I can't walk long distances or run at present - hence doing the training and the play at home suits me very well. Our dog is extremely responsive to my training and very obedient with me, she will usually follow me around and I'm the one who feeds her as well. However I've found over the last couple of weeks that if she ever wants a fuss it will be my husband that she goes to - she'll put her front paws up on his lap when he's sitting down, tail wagging and very happy to be with him - sometimes she'll even try to climb up on his lap, but she'll never do this with me! She'll happily accept a fuss from me if I instigate it but if we're both just sitting doing something it's him she'll go to for some love. Just very curious about this as I would have thought that she would tend to approach me as the person who devotes more time, activities, learning experiences to her - seems ironic!! Any ideas? I wouldn't mind a cuddle every now and again!
Edit: forgot to add that ironically she generally has a fear of men and it took longer for her to warm to my husband and not shy away from him when we first got her - makes it even stranger to me that she chooses him for fuss now but I am only a novice in dog behaviour so maybe this is significant
Thank you all for your answers, it's been interesting to read what you guys think. I did wonder whether it had anything to do with the fact that a friendly and kind male was a bit of a new thing to her and so it might be triggering her to go to him more. Thank you also for the link on calming signals - I've just read this (most interesting!!) and will look out for her signals and attempt to respond appropriately. Just to clarify, I would never get angry or anything like that at the fact she is going to my husband - all I want for her is to give her a good home where she feels safe and happy so if that's what she wants then all good, just really wanted to broaden my knowledge of dog behaviour and why she might be doing it. I will ask my husband to control the situation a little more over the next few days and see what this does - reading the calming signals article made me think - she does always have her ears back when she goes to him which I read here is a signal. Thanks once again
Question #5:
Do they make good family pets? how much exercise do they need every day? anything else i need to know? I have a Border Collie 14 week old puppy.
Question #6:
If you were to take a bottle and put food in it, what would your favorite dog breed do? Be all smart and trick the food to crawl into your dog's mouth, or... just gnaw right through the bottle? And what do you imagine the breed's thoughts as it's getting to the food?
For example, the Border Collie would be the one to expertly get the food out of the bottle. "Ah, I see you hiding in there. Out you get now, onto the floor!"
And a Bulldog would just gnaw through the bottle without care. "Stupid bottle. You think you can keep MY food from me? Think again!"
Legit, in case it's needed: Are brachycephalic dogs the only breeds that have smelly farts?
Question #7:
Tomorrow I am picking up my new 9 week old male tricolor border collie. He's gorgeous and such a sweetheart. Since he's just a puppy I won't do any hard exercise with him, but I'd like to take him for a few walks a day and start with some simple obedience. Tomorrow evening I'm going to take him out for a walk. My question is, how long should I walk him?
Question #8:
My dog got into a container of butter my family left sitting up on the counter. There wasn't much left in it .. only some butter mostly coating the bottom.
She's a Border Collie mix, so she isn't a tiny dog. Should I be worried about this, or is it nothing?
It was Blue Bonnet, lol. :P
Question #9:

Question #10:
I have a 9m.o border collie bltch who is dog aggressive. She has learnt A LOT of bad habits of my dad's BC who barks at dogs (she spends 5 days a week with dad at the farm) About 2-3 months ago we were doing one of our hikes. I had Skye on her halti, she would growl at every dog. Then this Labrador and spaniel came running up to her OFF leash and jumped on her. I managed to kick the spaniel off and the lab had Skye's butt in her mouth. I grabbed the Lab by the scruff until he/she let go. Their owners walked over as casually as you like, not doing anything! They asked who started the fight to which i replied their labrador. One of the woman then said oh no, it was defiantly your dog, she looks a bit.... and walked off!!!! That was fight no.1. After that encounter i worked very hard with Skye to the point where she does well off leash with other dogs. I did the same hike yesterday but had her off leash (i did have her lead available). We were at the beach were she was having fun playing with Holly (dad's other BC) running in and out of the water as crazy as you like. Getting to my point....we stopped for an ice cream, Skye hadn't growled once. This dog was barking in the distance and then Skye started to growl at this couple walking past! She was on lead at this point and i didn't think anything of it as i thought it was more to the barking dog then the couple. I let her back off on the way back and we were up on the footpath with this couple and their Labrador walking down along the beach. Skye then growled and started to run towards the dog, i called her she turned round to come back and then their Lab started to chase after her, growling, ready for a fight. The lab did clip Skye's back end but me and the other dogs owner were quickly their to intervene. I know this was Skye who started this ''fight''. She NEVERS actually stay to fight but it's her growling which does it. I put her back on leash for a short while then let her back off where she was fine. Then i got thinking. That dog was a black Labrador, the same breed and colour that attacked Skye a few months earlier only a hundred yards from the same place. Could it be that it was the fact the dog was a black Labrador that triggered it?? If i remember correctly it was the only lab we saw that day! Could my dog dislike black Labradors because of the incident months earlier??
Lyssa Hanson - It wasn't the same dog because the first Labrador was with 2 spaniels (one that tried to also attack and what that didn't do anything) and had 3 people walking them who were American. This seond Lab was alone with his two owners who were well and truly English!
Question #11:
My family has decided to get a border collie. We picked him out today and are going to pick him up on Tuesday. He is a 9 week tricolor male. I have a few questions, but first let me explain. We have no young children in our family. Just my mom and dad, and me (only child). I am 16. We have a large back yard though it is not fenced in. I am an avid runner and go for an hour a day. My mom walks for an hour every day. She would take him on her walk and I would take him on my run. I would also love to teach my border collie obedience tricks to keep him mentally stimulated and take him out in the snow to play in the winter. The problem is I don't have an agility course, and there isn't one nearby. Will my BC be okay with the exercise of a regular dog, plus mental stimulation throught obedience?
p.s.- My aunt's neighbor has a BC that does about the same activites as I plan for mine to do and he is happy as can be. Is this the norm for BC's who go without herding? Can they be happy as a well-exercised family pet?
Thank you

Question #14:
Ive been working with my herding instuctor for about a year. But recently i have been spending nights and helping out with all the trails she has been having lately (one a month, USBCHA sanctoned). Because of this always being around her for up to 4 days and nights at a time you can imagine ive seen her working with her dogs and she has given me training tips on things that i have trouble with on my dogs or things that she doesnt neccasaraly let her dogs do (Sit in the cab of my pick up etc). Ive having one problem with my border collie (herding and nipping hard at my cattle dog). She said SMACK him with the cane. This weekend i have seen her hit her dogs with a soild wooden cane, a METEL pipe across one dogs hips because he wouldnt listen. When i went out to work Max, Moss, and Twig. Max was tied and was barking from wanting to work(he could see) she went over and POUNDED on him with the cane (you heard the wind rush by the cane on the way down and the Solid "thump" when it hit the dog. She told me to do this twice. She told me to hit both MY dogs with the cane if they dont listen. When one of her dogs didnt listen and cornered the cat, instead of giving a command she grabbed him by the scruff. Alpha rolled him, and shook the crap outa him (his head hit the ground) and started hitting his face hard).
Ive known for a while that something has been off, If she so much as raises her voice a little, her dogs slink off the feild. She will then procide to chase them down drag them back. The dogs dont work because they enjoy it with her. They work and listen out of fear. She says come and they crawl back....please help.
No, she has no boss. Im in apprentiship with her.
Im not complaining...im looking for things i can do to save her dogs. An make sure she cant take anymore people in to appreniceship...
If i report her, the contract we have signed would be null and void correct? I have 2 years apprentiship with her. As well as a few other things signed in the contract.
Question #15:
we just got one and i don't know how to train it cause' she's so energetic
Question #16:
My question is in regards to how people see Intact Dogs. This question involves you knowing a bit about me and my dogs, and what i do.
Ive always owned intact dogs. Males and females. At the moment i current have 4 males, 2 intact 2 neutered. 2 aussie cattle dogs, 1 doberman, 1 border collie. All are over a year. Ive never had any fights amongst my dogs. All of my dogs are well trained, go to the dog park, friends houses, camping and 3 do dog sports. 2 being reg. show/trial dogs.
Example one:
Before a trial all dogs must go see a certain local vet (our local trials are on cattle and we have had a few farmers bring in dogs with hip problems or vison problems so its a precaution). The vet was shocked at how all the intacct dogs, both male and female were so well behaved. No aggression among the males or females. All dogs greeting each other like long lost friends except for the older dogs who kinda wanted to not be bothered. But even then just a growl and they would lie back down.
Example 2: When going to the pet shop or people come to our local trials they are amazed that so many intact dogs can get along together peacefully.
Questions: Why are people so biased on intact dogs? Why can 1 GOOd breeder have 3-5 intact males and more females and have little to no problems among the males and females, but then others get 2 intact males or females and they want to fight 24/7? Opinions are great.
Question #17:
i have a border collie pit bull mix, and when i pet him, my hand is covered in black and white hairs. is this normal?
Question #18:
i have a 15 month old male border collie. he already knows sit, laydown, play dead, catch frisbees, and fetch. any suggestions? thank you in advance.
Question #19:
We have a new rescue that I suspect is an Aussie mix, or possibly a Border Collie mix. He's probably about 6 months old and he has a blue merle coat. I'll posts pics sometimes later this week, but for now, I'm trying to figure out what he could possibly be. So which breeds have a tendency to come in that color?
Question #20:
She is 9 1/2 weeks now. But when is it okay to start low flying frisbee?
I know she shouldn't do the jumping yet so im not going to until she is over a year.
please answer my question, not tell me to do something else.

The pet food recall scared us into making our own dog food at home for Blacky and Yeti. We did alot of research into dog nutrition requirements and went through alot of trial and error trying out new recipes for the dogs - seeing what they liked and what they didn't. We ended up with quite a few super yummy recipes. Our friends begged us to share the recipes with them and we realized there were probably lots of other dog owners out there that would love to try these dog food recipes out on their dogs too! So, 123 DogFood.com came into being. It really is as easy as 1-2-3.
