Question #1:
I have a full blooded Chesapeake bay retriever with excellent hunting lines (his dad was a bomb sniffer as well). He loves to play fetch with tennis balls and runs when he does that. The problem is when we do long retrieves with bumpers. He will bolt there and then trot back, or get distracted
Question #2:
i want a rhodesian ridgeback or a chesapeake bay retriever
Question #3:
So my neighbor has 2 pugs and one Chesapeake bay retriever. The retriever is really protective of her territory and since this is the first dog that I would be getting, she is going to flip out!! When she was a year and a half, she did $2,000 worth of damage to an adult Dalmatian.
Earlier today my friend brought her pit bull over and we let her run lose in our fenced in yard. When my neighbor's retriever saw the pit running, she started growling and thrashing against her kennel. My neighbor's don't have a fenced in yard, so when they let the Chesapeake bay out, they just let her run lose in their yard. So if I were to get a dog and have her in our fence, and my neighbors let their dog out who is super dog aggressive and she came over onto my property and my dog and their dog got at it through -MY- fence on -MY- property, but -MY- dog ripped up -THEIR- dog on -MY- property because they let her lose even though there -is- a leash law, my dog would be put down cause she is a pit bull...I can just see it happening now cause of all the bad media the breed gets. BTW, no breeds are banned in my town.
I know my neighbors really well. I used to hang out with them all the time. So I went over there and asked them if they could keep their dogs leashed and not let them run lose because I was going to get a dog. Then they asked what breed and I said it didn't really matter, but I was going to get a pit bull. The husband got a little mad and told me to keep it away from his children and I just shook it off. Their two pugs walk over into our lawn all the time to poop and pee. We are tired of it.
So I don't know what to do anymore because I will not let their dog attack mine. I refuse to allow them get away with putting my life and my dogs life in danger by not following the law and letting their dog aggressive hunting dog run lose and possibly come over onto my property.
Any ideas? should I talk to them again? Call the cops the next time I see the dogs off the leash or out of the kennel??
I'm just so frustrated because my dog is going to be my world, my life, my baby. She is going to be my top priority and will come before anything else. I may only be 16, but I don't care because I love this breed and know exactly who they really are <3
Thanks
.:[Miss you Holly.Marie.Lynn.Kibbles]:.
Do not comment if you have bad things to say about the breed. I came within inches of getting attacked by a mistreated and human -aggressive pit bull two winters ago. But guess what, I had known more loving, lick you to death pit bulls before that -ONE- bad pit bull. The question is about their dog and what should I do, not about who you are to judge me and what breed I am to want!
Thank you though for those of you who have answered in a positive manor :D
For those of you that doubt I will be able to control a Pit, excuse me you dont know me. I grew up around them. My babysitter had one. My best friend has one. I know how to take care of them. I have been doing reports and changing peoples minds since I was in 7th grade. I've been volunteering at animal shelters for the last 2 yrs. Working with pit bulls because no one else really wanted to go near them. They were all -AFRAID- of them. Guess what. I live in -THIS- moment. I dont care what people think. I move forward and I will do what is best for me. I have been going back to this dog and testing her. She is not food aggressive. I push her, grab her tail, pull her skin, do everything, she doesn't care. She takes corrections -VERY- well and understands that I am the Alpha, not her. I have taught her not to pull and more. Please feel free to email me if you have anymore concerns on why I wouldn't be a good match for owning a pit bull! it was made when I was 13, I think that proves it all
Question #4:
Question #5:
ok its between a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a German Shepherd. i have owned dogs before just not these 2 breeds. all i am asking is which one you would get and why. so like maybe what you think of the two breeds. i have done a lot of research but now i want to hear from actual owners.
yeah the chesapeake's LOVE water.i think i might go with the german shepherd cause they will play with me but also just lay around.
anna, should i get a doberman instead?i havent even considered them. can you email me info on them?
Question #6:
Well, I got my dog at a pet store a couple years ago. I know pet stores are bad and I know all about puppy mills, it wasn't the plan to buy from a pet store and we had actually planned to get a German Shepherd from a breeder, but we saw her and I'm glad we did. We just saw the cute chocolate lab with some yellow on her feet and chest and she was the cutest, sweetest dog ever. When we got home and looked at her papers they said she was "Phantom Labrador". Well, as she got older we realized she wasn't full lab and now I'm starting to realize she's probably a chesdor (lab/chesapeake bay retriever). Well, anyways, is "phantom" just something pet stores throw in front of a breed name when they're not sure if the breed is full blood so they can't get sued later on or something? Because I'm pretty sure theres no such thing as a Phantom Labrador.
Excuse me, but I really didn't ask for critism, the way I look at is I saved her life. Before you go and call me ignorant, take a look at yourself, you're the one judging me when you don't know me at all, you f***ing b*tch. My dog is almost three years old and in perfect health. I don't care if shes mixed with something else, she's wonderful anyway. I wouldn't ever buy from a pet store again, its a ripoff, but I didn't make a mistake with her.
I looked in shelters too, but I wanted a puppy and I could never find a dog I was interested in. I've ALWAYS gotten my pets from shelters before that. Get off your f***ing high horse.
Yeah, she looked like the eight one down on the woodhavenlabs website as a puppy(:
I was going to. We just went to the pet store for something to do, we hadn't intended on getting a dog that night and like I said, we had arranged to get one from a breeder. Why do you care so much what I do with my life? My dogs in great health. I'm sure my one purchase didn't profoundly affect the puppy mill industry. I do wish I would have met her at a shelter, but I didn't. Whats done is done and I can't change it. I don't regret getting her, even though I wish my means of getting her were different. I don't believe in puppy mills. Now, get a life and stop harrassing teenagers on the internet because you're so "high and mighty". I bet you're a fat, old, lonely housewife who has noone but her pets and the internet to keep her company. Get a f***ing life.
You going around calling people ignorant is kind of hypocritical of you, dontcha think? You don't know me at all, yet you're on here bashing me because I got my dog at a pet store. I didn't know what puppymills were before I got her, had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have even gone in. So, yes, at the time I was ignorant about puppy mills. You seem to be a little too proud. Sorry, the picture of the bird threw me off.
Eh, no, I have about an a/b average. Used to be d/f, but I brought it up, thanks for asking. I do believe it was you who started the immature insult game ;)
Hahahahahahah.
152 lbs, hun, you're the big girl ;)
Ya know, you're never going to make any friends being so closed minded and quick to judge. That's weird, I'm only two inches shorter and twenty pounds lighter, I guess those two inches really do make a difference, so, excuse me, miss. Well, hot damn, look at you! You got that edumuhcashion ;D Listen, I don't care how fat you are, or how much time you spend on your school work, I just don't feel like I was deserving of your critism, as I am only a little ignornant fool who doesn't know any better(; You see, at the time of my purchase I had no knowledge of what the puppies at petland had to go through and learned soon after, but you still fail to let up and stop being a jerkface. Lemme guess, you're a capricorn? Haha.
I know exactly what "ignorant" means. At the time, yes, I was ignorant, but you used it in such a spiteful way that, can you believe it, it bothered me. Good day.
Like, I said, at the time I was ignorant, but now I'm more informed. Did you really not get that the first and second time I said it?
Ahh! it fits. I mean, I was thinking Capricorn because of the dedication you had.
and the coldness. But, bitter and intolerble fit just fine.
Thank you very kindly, ma'am. I apologize for getting so worked up. :)
Question #7:
Okay so I have been asking questions on here trying to figure out the dog for me that fits my standards. I can't choose one so I am needing some help. Just pick one. No reason necessary just seeing which is most chosen so I know what I want.
--Irish Setter
--Golden Retriever
--Lab
--Chesapeake Bay Retriever
--German Short Haired Pointer
Well me and my rents are in between all of them and we think there all really adorable and they all meet our standards sooo..... We aren't gonna pick just by the answers on here it just narrows it down for us.
We are NOT going by looks and we are all VERY active and big time river swimmers. We have done TONS of research on all these dogs and they all seem perfect for us. Like I said we aren't going by what people here say it just narows it down a little for us and as of right we are thinking GSP, Golden R., Or a Irish Setter.
We live in the country we have 7 acres just for the dog. I bike 7 miles a day and swim every day. Grooming will be done every day if neccisary.
Question #8:
I have a chesapeake and whenever she drinks she literally leaves a 5 foot trail of water that drips out of her mouth. its not just little drips of water, the floor ends up soaked. Is this normal for this breed of dog. She is about 2 years old.
Question #9:
i adopted a pretty 6 month Chesapeake bay retriever and i named her Daisy she is smart sweet and calm i thought big dogs would be Hyper i Guess i was wrong i would like to know more about the breed and your personal experience thank u , i love my dogs
Question #10:
i know she needs to go to the vet, i thought there might be something i could do for her while i am waiting on her appointment time!!!!!
Question #11:
My girlfriend and I are going to be moving into a small suburban house in a small town. We were thinking of getting a puppy. It would be just the 2 of us and we are experienced owners of labs, huskies, smaller terriers, and dalmatians. But we were thinking of getting a medium/large sized dog for the house/protection/companionship. It would be just the 2 of us living in the house but we have family that would visit regularly with both children and other dogs and wed like a dog that would socialize well. We'd also like a dog that would be easy to find breeders of and will do fairly well if left alone for afternoons but still has enough energy for routine exercise. So far weve been considering
Doberman
German Shepherd
Great Dane
Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Mastiff
Since we are moving within the next couple of months I was wondering if there are any experienced owners of these breeds that may tell me if any of them are appropriate for my situation and what I can expect from them
thank you in advance
Question #12:
I have 3 dogs, but the one in question is a 12 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Marley.
Recently we've been finding vomit around the house. It's nothing too out of the ordinary, kind of a dark mustard yellow bile with bits of grass in it. This has happened before, but it's never been a big deal. I've been informed that dogs eat grass when they feel sick or sense that something's wrong because it makes them throw up and feel better. For that reason, I never really thought it was something to worry about.
But yesterday I came home to find over 10 puddles of vomit spread out across the house. A few in the living room, a few in the kitchen, a few on the stairs, and a few in our basement. There was an unusually large amount of grass in it. Not only was it a pain in the ass to clean, but it made me feel really bad for my dog.
Now I can hear her stomach growling with a nasty squishing noise, and she's quite gassy. She still eats and drinks normally, and isn't any less active than normal. She doesn't even seem to be bothered by her stomach (other than the fact that she's vomiting, of course). So what can I do?
Question #13:
I have a 4 year old Long haired Chessie and his coat is getting a little ridiculous. Other than around his ears and tail (which normally I take care of) , his coat is getting a little uncontrollable. I was just wondering if there is anything that I can do to shorten his hair even by just a little bit, just so that it isn't so mangy looking. Now I have done my research and I know that all out shaving him is not good, but is it alright to just shave a little bit off. Also how often is it ok to bathe him. I also know that it can be detrimental to his health if he is bathed frequently, and that swimming is the best option for a bath. And while he does swim at least once a week, the only real lake that we have access too definitely leaves him smelling like stale water. Any bit of advice would be greatly appreciated, and I thank y'all for your time
Question #14:
in class today someone saw me reading the page on the CBR (Chesapeake Bay retriever)
he recommended i meet this breeder who is in town for the week.
he doesnt have a website but he breeds Chesapeake Bay retriever for show and work (hunting)
i met some of the dogs they were amazing. he allowed me to watch the dogs do some retrieval and let me watch a video of him duck hunting with them.
hips and eyes are tested on all his dogs and are wonderful.
and shots all puppies are shot over at 6,7,8 weeks of age and worked with birds and introduced to water. guarantees the puppies for 24 months and gives replacement or money back if they have a hereditary defect. all come with Full AKC reg and ownership. he onyl breeds twice a year at most three times.
i liked the breeder because he talked to me answered all my questions i answered all of his and he said he understood i was still looking into breeds but would be happy to put me on a waiting list for a pup in 3-4 years if i decided to go with him and his breed. a dog that has show potential and drive.
he only breeds CH dogs ive forgotten their show names the male i met was a CH but he just called him Jacky or jacko.
this is honestly the nicest most forthcoming and tolerant breeder ive met he didnt once get testy with all my Q's or emails ive sent today after meeting him and realizing i forgot to ask this or that. in fact he seems to enjoy all my pestering! been sending me pictures of his dogs hunting since i got home!
what do you think of this guy?
what do you look for in your breeder? and your breed?
Skipper: he doesnt breed the same dog twice he has like 6 (dont freak girl)
to those that keep saying rescue most of you will be reported for spamming/ ranting ect nothing to do with my Q.
i will not be adopting a dog a shelter or rescue.
i adopted a mutt who ended up having a heart defect and died at just 3 years old. their was no warning.
then my father adopted a dog that seemed reasonably sane but wasnt he came with alot of and i do mean ALOT of emotional baggage we have been unable to overcome.
my akita is a rescue long story short the rescuer was for akitas only and at some point i recently found separated the mother from the pups to young resulting in some issues i am still dealing with. no shelters and no rescues for my next dog. i didnt say i was having trouble finding breeders for all the dogs just some. also i want drive in the dog my akita has very little drive as did the previous rescues i mentioned. i want to be sure of health, temperament and what im getting into with a dog i cant find that out with a rescue half the time
ADD:
im sorry i thought everyone would get it...
he only gives FULL AKC reg to people who plan to show or work and then he doesnt charge extra for it. also gives full ownership only to those who show or work
jaime: yes, just got an email from him he extends it once we have taken the second set of genetic tests as long as we keep following up on them and the shots for three years he keeps the guarantee valid
also does temperament testing forgot to add it
Question #15:
i realize ive asked similar Q's before but i respect many users imput on dog breeds they may be more familiar with than myself.
still looking through breeds.
usually i, for everyone sanity, do not post all the dogs on the list of breeds im interested in.
ive studied and considered dozens of breeds i want to know what im getting into . i can like the dog for some things but decide that something else about that breed would be too much.
breeds i currently have on the list:
samoyed
leonberger
akita (own one now who is very well socialized unfortunately cant find a breeder i like)
Anatolian Shepherd
Chesapeake Bay retriever .
GSD (been around GSD's all my life but never owned one, cant find a breeder i like)
rott (ive had a rott before, cant find a breeder i like)
what is your experience or general knowledge of these breeds? maybe you'll have something i havent found researching.
i plan to show or do another event like water sports or Sch.
i live on 70 acres have 3 tanks full of water and a large high game fence i do water retrieval with my akita daily plus a 1 to 2 hour walk (depending on how he is after the water time) i am gone no more than 3 1/2 hours for 4 days a week. dogs sleep inside. i do reward training with toys and the occasional low cal treat. i will not be getting this dog for some time i just want to be prepared.
which of THOSE above breeds do you think would best suit the environment i provide?
ADD:
Maggie: my akita is well socialized do not believe bad media and those with dogs that werent socialized he actually likes other dogs ive had him playing with dachshunds and great danes as well as a friends husky never showed any signs of aggression towards another dog. i had him out as soon as he was UTD on shots with dogs i knew to be healthy and friendly.
dana: i will not be adopting a dog purebred or otherwise from a shelter or rescue.
i adopted a mutt who ended up having a heart defect and died at just 3 years old. their was no warning.
then my father adopted a dog that seemed reasonably sane but wasnt he came with alot of and i do mean ALOT of emotional baggage we have been unable to overcome.

i am considering imports after you mentioned that i saw some that were very nice outside the u.s
Question #16:
She is all up in my personal area licking and sniffing I'm not being disgusting! It can be quite annoying. It seems she always has her face in my business. Its either when I'm standing doing something or talking to someone or when I vacuum her fur. She is almost 2yrs, She is a Chesapeake bay retriever and may be part Labrador.
She dosen't do it to my husband though just me!
I didn't mention I just started happening this week!
Question #17:
i have two chesapeake bay retrievers and they wont eat out of a specif bowl they eat out of one of the bowls but leave the other one full. and when i put it on the ground they eat it.
they would rather eat it off the ground than the bowl. does any one know why?
Question #18:
My dog is a 1 year-3 month old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, he has a very strong appetite and loves to eat food. Today, I brought him in for dinner and he wouldn't touch his food. I got worried and looked out back to find that he had shredded open a bag of charcoal. I looked around and saw that there was a pile of feces/throw up (I'm not quite sure which) that looked like squishy, soggy charcoal. Could he have eaten the charcoal? What will happen to him? Should I be worried? Should I take him to the vet? I'm desperately seeking help, I really don't want to lose my baby.
as far as I know it was just plain charcoal, if that matters at all..
Question #19:
i noticed it yesterday, it's about the size of a small egg. As if he has a "goose egg" on his shoulder. It moves around and is squishy, he doesn't notice it when i squeeze it or put pressure on it so i assume it doesn't hurt. We are pup sitting a friend's pitt, could this be from rough play? He is only 5 months old so i hope it isn't something serious. You cant see anything when you part his hair around the knot. Thanks for the info..
Question #20:
While walking my puppy (9 month old pom) this morning (around 4 AM) when i got off of work I heard a high pitched whining, my pom and I investigated the noise and found a lone kitten between a shed and a building, the opening was only about a palm's width thick and there were pipes laid in the opening, along with the kitten. I looked for the mother, the other kittens, or someone around the building until 8 this morning. I called the vet and made an appointment, first available is tomorrow.
I dont know how old she is, but i just read that you can tell by which teeth have grown in already, but im not going to wake her up to check, she finally calmed down and fell asleep. I have raised two puppies, but not from this young (I got both of them at 8 weeks). She still has blue eyes and she can walk, but it is still really low to the ground. She has some of her teeth, I could feel them when she tried to nurse from my finger. I have her sleeping on top of a towel and heat pad (set on low) and I am aware of how to stimulate to potty.
Is there anything else I need to know in the mean time?
How should i monitor my pups around her? They are very well behaved and socialized, I want to use this as another socialization tool for them, but not risk the stress or well being of the kitten. Other than my pom (who just wants to lick the kitten) I have a 5 month old 52 pound chesapeake bay retriever (who will be a duck hunting dog, so he is being trained to have a "soft mouth" and he is very delicate with my 5 pound pom).
The kitten had a couple fleas, ants, and a lot of dirt on her but her eyes and nose are clear of discharge and her poo was solid with no blood, mucus or worms. Should I attempt to bathe her or wait for the vet?
Thank you for the help, I am new to this section, I am a regular in the dog section.

any idea how old she might be? She is finally asleep with my fiance..
