Question #1:
Books on history, training, breeding, everything and anything you can think of. I find some, but they are so general it covers just the basic dog stuff.
A book written by a top breeder would be great!
Question #2:
Over the weekend, I adopted a sweet little miniature black and tan dachshund. She is 4 years old (they estimate) and has clearly had at least one litter of puppies. I'm annoyed with her previous owner because this dog should never have been allowed to have puppies due to her small size and very long back.
She will walk VERY slow sometimes and often drags her feet behind her on purpose. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow to be x-rayed, because I'm concerned. I have had dachshunds before but they have not encountered back problems. I just want to know if these are signs that something is wrong with her back or if maybe some dachshunds just have quirks like dragging their hind legs every now and then.
I just wish people who get dachshunds would understand how to care for their backs. This little thing has been allowed to jump, get up on furniture, and had puppies. I believe she would have been totally fine if she'd been trained not to jump. I have gotten her to where she is not getting up on the furniture anymore but it was obvious when I first got her that she thought jumping on furniture was a fine thing to do.
Question #3:
my boyfriend and i adopted a dachshund a week ago...he is going to be 2 years old in december, his previous owners (are going to have a baby soon) decided it would be appropriate to find him a new home when he was lately being over protective of the wife,(they did not want to take the chance of him being aggressive towards the baby) and showing aggression to the husband. they had mentioned that he had actually growled and snipped at the husband. is this a dominance issue jealousy or just being over protective.
and now to my part of whats going on, hes been a great dog since we've gotten him, great with other dogs and people, he has shown nothing but love to my boyfriend and myself, until earlier tonight he was laying with me on the couch and my boyfriend came over to kiss me when he did that he started to raise his lips, my boyfriend "stood his ground" and when he backed off the dog ran over to him and tried to play roughly, when my boyfriend picked him up and held him he started to raise his lips again. the dog is now back to normal like nothing happened. we spend the same amount of time with the dog, we have the same exact schedule and do everything together with him so i don't see why he would favor me or try to protect me for any reason.
IS THIS TRAINABLE(SOMETHING THAT CAN BE FIXED BEFORE ITS TO LATE? IF SO, HOW? ALSO IS THIS JEALOUSY DOMINANCE OR JUST BEING OVER PROTECTIVE? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED WE LOVE HIM TO DEATH AND WOULD LIKE TO HELP HIM. THANK YOU
Question #4:
I put him in a kennel along with our other two small dogs and he digs grass and covers the food and puts it in his water?
Should i be concerned?
Question #5:
I have a mini Dachshund and I just want to see what you would recommend and why or why not?
Question #6:
Hi,
I am currently looking at getting a little mate for my dachshund (8months). My concerns are that I'll get a dog that might change her personality..like an older dog. Is this true, can a dog's personality change a lot when you get another dog that's a little bit older. My current dog is a house dog and she follows me around everywhere, very lovable and playful and intellegent.
Option one: An older dog that needs rehoming (she's not that old...but i'll just say old coz she's not as young is my current dog). The "older" dog is 2.4yrs old. She's very alert and a little bit of a barker when she sees somebody walk pass but I'm not too concerned about that. The other thing is, she's a bit dominant when it comes to food...thus will eat food quickly and go for other dog's food..so if i decide to get her, i'll most probably have to feed the two dogs separate. She had 2 litters before (just mentioning), is a bit of a barker, food dominant and a champ show dog and I will continue to show her. Her current owner has fell very sick and thus the only reason for rehoming her.
and
the other option is to get a dog that is the same age as my current dog (8 months) with more or less the same temperament. The only thing is, this dog will cost about $850 (discounted amount as I know the breeder, thank goodness but I still cant really afford it)
I would just like to know if you had a simular situation, if you adopted another dog, did he/she change your other dog's personality, or any advice that you can give would be much appreciated.
Please no rude comments, i cant write a noval so just focus on what i'm asking here. If you need more info, just ask and i'll add it. I have my current dog at interest and just want to get her a mate. I'm also keen to show so the other dog for that reason would also be a good option, but how does dogs react to a new dog in the house or do their personalities change when you get another dog.
(I've always had one dog in my life (17yrs) and when she passed i promised myself that when i get another dog, i'll get her a friend)
Thank you in advance for your replies.
By "Mate", I meant friend..sorry.....

Question #10:
I just bought a mini dachshund and was wondering what is the best food for them. Also looking at cost efficiency as well. this is my first small dog.
Question #11:
Yesterday, I adopted a new dog. She is a 4-year-old black and tan miniature dachshund. I currently own a dachshund mix who I adopted a little over a year ago. She is the color of a red dachshund, but has the longer legs. Both dogs are about the same size weighing around 10 pounds.
Anyway, Amber is my old dog. Chloe is the new one. The two met yesterday on a neutral ground (a dog run) that was fenced in. They ran around with each other and got along pretty well. They are doing well in the house also. When fed together they each eat their share and they don't try to take each other's food.
My question is this. How should I go about with the whole "sharing" thing? Amber has her bed and Chloe has hers. If they choose to swap beds, is that okay? How will I know if one is trying to be possessive? I'm trying to nip any of that in the bud before it happens.
Karen- No, I don't mean from the same bowl. I just mean in their own bowls at the same time in the kitchen. You know how sometimes dogs will go for the other dog's bowl just because? What I meant is that they don't do that. They are very respectful of each other's space.
Question #12:
My family found this Dachshund in the street about 7 months ago. He didn't have tags and he looked kind of scratched up and scraggly, but we thought it was weird that a pure bred Dachshund would be roaming the street. So we took him in and looked for his owner for 5 months. We put up signs and put up signs...we brought him to the vet to see if he was chipped. (he wasn't) We put up ads in the paper. But with no luck. (just a bunch of freaks calling to lie so that they could get a free dog....) We didn't want to give him to some shelter where he would sit for so long, isolated and upset when we could give him a loving home. So we got him shots and called him our own. (if something comes up and the owner comes forward, then we would be glad to give him back)
He is a bit irritable and a bit stand-off-ish when we first got him. He flinched away from our touch and seamed scared when we raised our voices. We figured he had just been abused. Since then we have been able to get him to warm up to us and become more social. He favors me the most of all my family. He hasn't had any violent outburst or signs of violence.
But recently, he was chewing on a water bottle while I was petting him. He didn't growl or anything. He just jumped up and bit me. He had my hand behind my back and was shaking it profusely. I couldn't stop him because of the way my arm was twisted. I didn't feel any pain, but I knew he broke skin. My mom grabbed him while he was trying to readjust his grip on my hand and threw him off of me. When I pulled my hand back, it was bleeding. I have a good sized puncture wound in my index finger with a series of scratches and broken blood vessels on the rest of my hand. My ma threw my dachshund in the yard and came to check on me.
It bled for a good 20 minutes, and I can see inside my finger. It was numb at first. I almost feel lucky for that given the size of the hole. But it got swollen and purple. I put ice on it and a bit of rubbing alcohol.
After about an hour, we let the dog in. He came in with his tail between his legs and lied down on my feet. When I moved my feet, he jumped up on the couch and looked at me with his big eyes, sniffed my hand and put his head on my lap. He licked me. He looked genuinely sorry. I'm not mad at Ozzie (the dog) and I don't want him to be put down. That is the LAST thing that I want happen. I know that it was a freak accident and I don't blame him. I just want my finger fixed now.
Is there anything that I need to worry about? Anything else (besides triple-antibiotic cream) that I need to put on it? Shots I should worry about? I realize that I am going to get a scar because of how deep/wide this is, but is there anything that I could do to reduce the size/appearance of it?
(please no comments about how I should have my dog euthanized. I'm not angry and Ozzie is really sorry. He hasn't left my side since.)

Question #16:
I had been mixing Nature Choice canned food with some of her dry food. She really likes Beneful but i hear its really bad for dogs. Shes middle aged, and a little bit overweight. Any other good dog foods?
Question #17:
i wanted to clean my dachshunds ears so i got on some .com of a dachshund breeder or somebody and it said dachshunds need their teeth brushed daily. Is this true?? (I also have a morkie)
Question #18:
Okay I've had this dachshund for about 3 years now (He's 10 years of age though). Recently we purchased a chihuahua. We've had a lot of trouble introducing the two. The older one wants nothing to do with it, won't even look at him (Actually avoids looking at him). The little one gets excitement and try's to play, which usually ends up with the older one running for his life or growling and barking at the little guy.
Whenever we give the Chihuahua attention my older one gets jealous and begins to cry (We give the older one PLENTY of attention too) and then runs and starts eating the other dogs food.
I guess I'll get on with the questions.
1. Why does he steal the Chihuahuas food?
2. Why won't he look at the Chihuahua?
3. How can I introduce these dogs/make the older one get along with the younger one?
Sorry if any of this is confusing, had a tough time writing it up.
Thanks to everyone who answers.
Question #19:
I have a whole turkey left in the freezer, nobody likes turkey in my family.
My dogs love chicken and we often mix some white meat, skinless boneless chicken in their dry kibble (Canidae Chicken and Rice) - chopped small, mixed well.
Is it safe to substitute turkey for the chicken? A vet tech I know claims that lots of dogs come into the clinic with colitis and pancreatitis every Thanksging - from eating turkey. I am inclined to think it is from just eating too much rich food as leftovers, especially when they don't normally get anything but dry kibble most days.
Any experience with feeding your dogs turkey? Thanks.
Note: I am feeding 7 dachshunds.
Question #20:
I checked today at a vets place (they had one of those dog pound monitors) And while the vet was busy, we played with it. She was about 8.5 pounds (nothing but her on the instrument) I heard dachshunds should only be 7 pounds if I'm not wrong. She gets food once a day, blue buffalo - wilderness salmon. (also do your dogs prefer blue buffalo salmon, chicken or lamb and rice?) and occasionally some table scraps and raw meat (never bones, unless compressed raw hide and I'm watching her)
She HATES carrots, does she need more veggies in her diet? I heard dachshunds can get hip/joint/back/spine problems from being overweight, I hope this isn't too much of a load on her!
the problem is, that place was UNFORTUNATELY benefield from petsmart.
And you know them, they make you add on those ridiculous things, nail clips, hair cuts and what not.

Whoops! sorry double post!
My cousin told me that dogs bellies turn pink when their hungry. Is that true? (I think its a load of BS...)

The pet food recall scared us into making our own dog food at home for Blacky and Yeti. We did alot of research into dog nutrition requirements and went through alot of trial and error trying out new recipes for the dogs - seeing what they liked and what they didn't. We ended up with quite a few super yummy recipes. Our friends begged us to share the recipes with them and we realized there were probably lots of other dog owners out there that would love to try these dog food recipes out on their dogs too! So, 123 DogFood.com came into being. It really is as easy as 1-2-3.
