Question #1:

Is my Westie a cross breed?

We rescued our second westie roughly 7 years ago when she was just one year old. We already had a one year old female and had been told of a man who bred toy poodles for show and had recently aquired a young femal westie that he was planning on breeding. He tried to breed her too soon when she was basicly still a puppy on her first heat and had become agitated with her when she wouldn't breed. He basicly left her in an outdoor kennel/run, barely feeding or walking her. We met up with the owner and he agreed to let us have her for free as he has no use for her.

We knew straight away that she had been ill-treated. She wouldn't accept dog bisquits from us, but was happy to sit next to the bin as if waiting for scraps. She was wary of leads and dog baskets. When we tried to stroke her she'd tense up and her ears would go back. If you opened a door to let her out she wouldn't walk underneath your arm if you're male. And she's always had a sort of waddle with her back legs when she walks. Thankfully now she's completely relaxed and is the most gently, sweet dog ever. She loves to play and run about and keeps our other two dogs in their place.

It was only recently when we took her to the vet to get an ear problem checked out that we started to doubt if she was a purebred westie. She came with papers and has a kennel club name, but our usual vet was out and we had a trainee instead. He actually asked what breed she was which we thought was strange because besides her being maybe an inch taller than your average femal westie and having a much longer tail she just looks the same.

Our other westie is the complete opposite to her in looks. The only thing they have in common is that they're both white. And we're noticing the differences more and more these days.
Her ears are much larger.
Her head is bigger and she has pink skin instead of the black-ish colour i was told westies have.
Her eyes are a very light amber colour compared to the dark chocolate brown they're supposed to be.
She's much longer in length and stockier.
Instead of cat like paws she has shovel like ones.
And her back feet turn out slightly to the side.
Her tail is very long and she rarely holds it up straight.
Her coat is soft and thick and she once broke a pair of dog clippers because it was so thick. Her fur is straight and we've never been able to grow a "skirt" on her unlike our other westie.

The trainee vet said that somewhere in her ancestery there might have been a glenn of imaal terrier that was mistaken for a westie. Her face and expression looks so much like a glenn of imaals.

Obviously it doesn't matter what breed she is and she'll always be loved no matter what, but it got me thinking about her bloodlines.

Thanks in advance

Question #5:

How to best train my dogs to jog with me?

I have a Wheaten Terrier (5 mos and 3 weeks) and a Glen of Imaal Terrier (3.5 years).

I am wanting to start incorporating them into my jogs. They love walks but they play fight a LOT on leash while we are walking.

I just took them jogging and they seemed to like it even better - though they were all over the road (in my quiet neighborhood, but won't work for on the road, woods, or jogger's path). They did play fight a bit too.

How do I keep them focused and jogging with me? They LOVE it and I LOVE it so it just seems natural. I brought some treats which helped them focus a bit, but once I ran out, all hell broke loose haha. Then by the end of the jog they were tired out and acting perfectly.

I'm starting them on short distances around my neighborhood, and then we will gradually increase.

Any tips?
P.S. They are GREAT little hikers/joggers off leash on trails in the woods... But it won't work on a road...

Question #6:

Question #7:

How do you tell the difference between a glen of imaal terrier puppy and a wheaten terrier puppy?

I have a Wheaten terrier puppy who is 4 months old, and she seems a little small, though i haven't had a wheaten before. The breeder we got her from told us she was an irish coat wheaten, but didn't have the parents for us to see, which we were unhappy about, and said she would email us pictures of them and never did. I don't know if she seems a little small for her age. anyone who is experienced or a vet could you please give an opinion. I just want to know if I've got a wheaten or a glen. Here is a picture of her now, and she weighs 14 pounds. please only answer if you have experience of these dogs. just need peace of mind. thanks. x

Thats kind of a relief, and i know, the breeders did seem peculiar, they just didn't want us to see the parents, but i don't know where she would have ended up if i hadn't have got her, i just couldn't leave her there.
I know i was just curious, and my nan has ended up with 2 dwarf dogs, so i'm just a little paranoid I KNOW. I know she's baby, she's not too small, and Is for sure a wheaten. pheww.

Question #8:

Where can I buy a Glen Of Imaal Terrier?

I am interested in buying a Glen Of Imaal Terrier, but they are very rare. They happen to be the rarest of domesticated dog breeds. However, they are not expensive. One can be purchased at $500-$600. Is anyone on here aware of this breed? If so, are you aware of where I can purchase it? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Question #10:

Accuracy of dog breed selectors...?

**Note: I already asked this once but I made the mistake of posting it at like midnight so I didn't get hardly any answers so I thought I'd post it again :) Also, this is strictly for my own curiosity and amusement because I'm sick in bed and bored out of my mind... **

I'm curious to see how accurate dog breed selectors are when trying to see which breeds you are most/least compatible with.

Here's how it works...

Go to this link: Click Here

Fill out the questions as if you were searching for your ideal dog. Then post your results (top 8)

Then, go back an fill out the questions again, but this time fill in the exact opposite answers that you filled out the first time (ie, if you said you wanted a high energy dog the first time, fill in that you want a mellow couch potato this time) This should show which breeds you're least compatible with. Then post the top 8 results.

How accurate are your results? Was your favorite breed the #1 dog you were compatible with, or at least in the top 8? Were you surprised at what other dogs you are supposedly compatible with? Were you surprised at which ones your not compatible with?

My results:
1.Boxer
2.Glen of Imaal terrier
3.Staff Bull terrier
4. Vizsla
5.Dalmatian
6.German Pinscher
7.Havanese
8.Labrador

Toy Fox Terriers (which is my breed) were number 11 on the list, but still a good match at 97% compatible :)

Least Comaptible:

1.Pekingese
2.Chow Chow
3.Sealyham Terrier
4.Afghan Hound
5.Great Pyrenees
6.Lhasa Apso
7.Basset Hound
8.Bedlington terrier

Not surprised at some, ie Pekingese or Chow Chow, but I've known a Pyr, a Bedlington, and a Basset and liked them...

I picked the animal planet one because I've heard it's one of the more accurate ones and it doesn't take as long to do as some of the other ones...
Ok, so why is no one actually answering my question?????? I'm not asking whether or not you like them, I asked for you to go to th
***lol my dog just walked across my laptop keyboard and pressed submit before I was done typing! :) I swear she does the goofiest things...***

Anyway, what I was saying was got to the website and take the quiz and post your results and then see how accurate they are...
So Nedra, if you found my question "sooooo boring" why did you waste 2 minutes of your life to answer it with rude, sarcastic, arrogant remarks? Or for that matter, if doing the breed selector was "soooooo boring" why subject yourself to that kind of boredom? Did you honestly do it just so you could be rude to me and feel witty? And I said nothing about posting all "121 results", if you would have actually read my question I said post the top 8. Heck, if you would have scrolled thought the answers you should have picked up that everyone only posted the top 8 answers. And what's with the 15 "o"s in so? Are you really that immature? The only people who have that kind of grammar are15-year-old girls on Myspace. If answering my question with snotty arrogant remarks was the most interesting thing you had to do at the time, then obviously my "boring" question is much more interesting than your life.

Question #11:

Also I don't mind lots of grooming or shedding and all members of the house are 3-48 years old
I would also apperciate no negative comments towards any of the dogs i listed

Question #15:

West Highland White Terrier/Glen of Imaal mix?

How do they look as adults? Are they hard to train? Are they upset when left alone for a time period of about three hours? Do they adapt easily? Are they a bad combination? Say whatever you know about the hybrid!
Fine then, its a cross-breed. And by the way, I would never buy from a puppy mill. I am firmly against that. I am adopting from a shelter.
Why is everyone insulting! I was thinking about something else at the moment! I was listening to some program on National Geographic then so I accidentally typed hybrid! I understand that it is a cross breed so please quit being mean! I asked for help, not insults!
Sorry for being rude, I was just frustrated.

Question #16:

If you like a certain group of dog breeds, is there an ethical or moral obligation to?

help keep the lesser know breeds in that group going? For example, I like the terriers. So when choosing a puppy, should the relative popularity of the breeds within the group sway my decision at all? Do we have an obligation to keep all the breeds alive? Or should breeds be allowed to die out?

2006 Litter stats from the AKC web site:

Miniature Schnauzers - 12,645
Fox Terriers (Wire) - 564
Welsh Terriers - 371
Border Terriers - 304
Irish Terriers - 98
Lakeland Terriers - 98
Skye Terriers - 28
Sealyham Terriers - 15
Glen of Imaal Terriers - 10

Add: I included the terrier stats since that is the group I like. But the question holds true for all groups!
Add: Loki - yes, that is what I'm asking. Thanks!
add: Loki - thanks about the avatar - I finally found Kip's puppy pics!

Question #17:

Why is my neighbor's dog very aggressive?

One time, my neighbors were doing something outside. I saw their dog. I tried (note the word "tried") to pet their dog. While I was petting him, he suddenly tried to bite me. Is this a phase or is this one of the dog's traits?

Before I forget, he's a Glen of Imaal terrier.

Question #18:

Where do I find a GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIER Puppy for sale?

Rare breed... Being resourceful on the internet... I searched everywhere with no luck.... I found alot of nice Jack Russels which would be mysecond choice.

Question #19:

Glen of Imaal terriers, now rarer than giant pandas, What are the rarest dog breeds?

Glen of Imaal terriers, which originated in Ireland, are so rare there are even fewer of them in the world than giant pandas.

Heres the story Click Here

Question #20:

What kind of dog/puppy should I get?

I've had a Lab/Germen Shepherd mix for 3 years and I have been doing very well him (no behavior or dominace problems). I've been looking into buying a young dog or puppy. I've read a couple of dog breed books and researched the internet to refresh my memory. Here are 10 breeds I like and think would suit my lifestyle:
1. Border Terrier
2. Fox Terrier
3. Glen of Imaal Terrier
4. Basset Hound
5. Kookerhondje
6. English Springer Spainel
7. Lancashire Heeler
8. Great Swiss Mountain Dog
9. Picardy Shepherd
10. Shiba Inu

Here's my regualr day:
Leave the house at 8:20 and get home around 4:20. Someone will at my house in the time between that time but my leave a 2-3 times for no more then two hours. I have a medium sized house and a large backyard with a pool. I'm looking for a dog less then 45 pounds and under 20 inches tall.

My Lab/Germen Shepherd mix is very submissive and doesnt really like dogs bigger then him, he weighs 70 pounds and is 24 and a half inches tall.
He is very gentle and kind to other dogs but he does play and chase. He goes to the local dog park once or twice every week so he knows how to interact with other dogs. So, I need a dog that will be sweet to him and not to domiant, but will teach him to really get along with other dogs.

He was raised in a puppy mill and then went to a foster home with 5 other dogs and they kinda beat up on him , this is sorta why he's kinda like that.

The pet food recall scared us into making our own dog food at home for Blacky and Yeti. We ended up with quite a few super yummy recipes. Our friends begged us to share the recipes with them and we realized there were probably lots of other dog owners out there that would love to try these dog food recipes out on their dogs too! So, 123 DogFood.com came into being. It really is as easy as 1-2-3.
